The south may be increasingly gentrified and stuffy, but not so at these coastal communities. Home to some of the most laid-back surfers, fishermen, and professional hammock sleepers in the world, these enclaves are surefire places to check in and tune out. Add humidity, cheap drinks and affordable lodgings and you’ll be a shoeless, free-loving, tanned southern hippie in a North Carolina minute, which is as loooong as you want it to be.
Folly Beach, South Carolina: The closest beach to Charleston, South Carolina, this little island boasts of being “the edge of America.” Open-minded and sweet-smelling (especially during Big Gay Beach Day) with a funky main street and windswept, low-lying cottages, many come to Folly Beach for the amazing waves on Washout and stay for the good eats, good vibes, and relatively cheap cost of living.

So remember the cardboard Michael Jordan from earlier today? Yeah, we took him around Charlotte and took pictures of him with some fellow Charlotteans! There’s a ton more, which I’ll probably post sporadically within a couple days or so.

Even As A Vegetarian, This Place Smells Good.
Unfortunately I never took the opportunity to eat at this place before I switched to herbivorism. During the week at lunch time there’s a line that wraps around the building. My first guess… crack glaze.

I’ve shared my love of Charleston and Detroit. Now it’s time to show you my other favorite city.

Charlotte, North Carolina.
I lived here for a portion of my freshman year of college. Things didn’t turn out how I had planned but I still love this city. My time there taught me that if you want to become part of a community you need to get involved and make it happen. I didn’t do a good job of that while I was here and it is part of the reason I didn’t stay. Still, eighteen year old me learned many a lesson there and formed a friendship that will last until the end of time.
When it comes to Charlotte, if you like NASCAR at all, go visit. You will not be disappointed. That is what brought me there on vacation and to live. If you don’t, stop in anyway. It’s a pretty nice little city. Take a stroll through Uptown and grab some food. Spend some time at Discovery Place (because seriously I loved that place). As a person with a fondness for history, I loved Charlotte’s Museum. There is also the Levine Museum of the New South.
